Econet
Econet is a wildlife conservation group focused on protecting the natural environment in public open spaces and other sites in and around Reading. Our activities include coppicing, hedgelaying, scrub clearance, controlling non-native species, maintaining footpaths, and harvesting willow. Econet is part of the TCV (The Conservation Volunteers) Community Group Network and a member of the National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces.
Econet organises full-day weekly tasks at various sites in the area, along with half-day tasks at specific locations, held bi-monthly or monthly. Most tasks take place during the day, but there are occasional evening sessions at Waterloo Meadows in spring and summer.
New volunteers are always welcome. There’s no need to commit to regular attendance – you can join tasks whenever you’re available, or even for part of a task. No experience is required, training will be provided and task leaders are always on hand to offer guidance as necessary, and tools and gloves will be supplied.
Volunteers under the age of 18 years can only participate in Econet activities if accompanied by an appropriate adult (parent, guardian, social worker, teacher, etc.) responsible for their wellbeing and behaviour.
If you’re interested in volunteering with Econet, please complete our registration form or contact us.
Econet organises several events throughout the year. In April, Bean Pole Day is held at Caversham Court, promoting local woodland products and wildlife-friendly gardening. A Dawn Chorus Walk is held at Clayfield Copse in May. Meadow Day, held in July is also held at Clayfield Copse, celebrating the vibrant wildlife of early summer and a sale of Scots pine Christmas trees is held each December at Caversham Court.
Econet works with a range of organizations, including the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), National Trust, local councils, and schools. We are always happy to consider work that relates to or promote an interest in the natural environment, whether it’s a one-off avtivity or an ongoing task. If we’re unable to assist, we may be able to suggest others who can.
Econet provides Public Liability and Personal Accident Insurance for volunteers taking part in its tasks. Please note that the coverage under the Personal Accident Insurance is limited. For more information, please contact the Econet Treasurer.
